Protective Style Hair Care Routine

A protective style hair care routine has three parts: prepare the hair and scalp before the install, style with lightweight products that hold without buildup, and maintain the style with scalp moisture and nighttime protection. This is the routine Tiara Jasper, certified cosmetologist and professional braider since 2012, built Tiara's Crown Collection around.

Step 1: Before the Install

Start with clean, detangled, moisturized hair. Apply a light layer of Grapevine Oil to the scalp so it starts the style comfortable instead of dry. Use the Parting & Measuring Comb for even sections.

Step 2: During the Install

Use Braid Gel on each section for clean parts and flexible hold. Set the finished style with Braid Foam, then add shine with Braid Glaze or lock the look with Finishing Spray.

Step 3: Maintaining the Style

  • Scalp: Apply Grapevine Oil between parts a few times a week, or daily if your scalp runs dry. Scalp Therapy with tea tree adds a cooling refresh 2 to 3 times a week.
  • Frizz: Smooth flyaways with a small amount of Braid Foam or gel as needed.
  • Shine: Refresh with Hair Shine Spray between wash days.
  • Night: Sleep with the style wrapped or covered to reduce friction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I oil my scalp with a protective style?

A small amount daily or as needed. Consistency matters more than quantity, and lightweight oil will not weigh the style down.

How do I keep braids looking fresh?

Handle frizz early with foam, keep the scalp moisturized, refresh shine with glaze or shine spray, and protect the style at night. Full guide: How to Make Braids Last Longer.

What should I avoid in a protective style routine?

Heavy, greasy products that build up at the root, stacking multiple stylers in one spot, and skipping scalp care entirely.
